Writings, consisting of some articles and editorials but mainly of drafts and other materials relating to Turner's books, Wild by Law: The Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund and the Places It Has Saved and Roadless Rules: The Struggle for the Last Wild Forests; notebooks; editorial correspondence and other materials from Turner's work with Friends of the Earth; a small number of files documenting Turner's work with the Sierra Club; subject files (some arranged geographically and others alphabetically); clippings; personalia; and a few snapshots and portraits.

Tom Turner is an environmentalist and freelance writer. He started his career with the Sierra Club in 1968. In 1969, Turner left the Sierra Club to work at Friends of the Earth, an organization founded by David Brower, who had just been forced from his position as executive director of the SIerra Club. Turner worked at Friends of the Earth from 1969 until 1986, serving for one year as executive director and for fifteen years as editor of Not Man Apart, the organization's publication. In 1986, Turner took a position with the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund (now Earthjustice), where he has worked as a staff writer, director of publications, and senior editor. Turner has published extensively on environmental issues, authoring numerous books as well as articles in newspapers, journals, and magazines.
